Experiential Learning
Authentic experiential learning is the best way to take in new information and concepts, maximize retention, and effect positive behavior change. Since 1987 Mentor has shown that experiential learning provides fast, powerful, and lasting improvements to organizations and the greatest return on our clients’ investment of time and money.
Renown psychologist and educator Carl Rogers defined the term experiential learning as follows:
- learner self-initiates, self-evaluates, and is personally involved
- directly addresses the needs and wants of the learner
- learner’s objectives are clear
- knowledge that is immediately useful and applicable (versus academic)
- learner controls nature and direction of learning
- direct encounters with phenomena being studied, rather than merely thinking about the encounter
- abundant and well organized resources and support
- intellectual and emotional learning components are balanced
- safe and supportive environment for trying new behaviors
Mentor emphasizes authentic experiential learning in all of the courses we offer as well as our coaching and organization development work.
